Mushrooms are fascinating in true sense. Every day, scientists are discovering new things about them which in some way or other affects our world either ecologically, economically or medicinally. Several of the lifesaving drugs, like Penicillin, made use of mushrooms.

Now it has been established scientifically that mushroom mycelia are responsible for the origin of life on earth. We are surviving because of them only. Plants can avail and absorb several essential minerals from the soil because of fungi. Mushrooms are the recycler of this planet. Earth would have been clogged by the dead, if mushrooms were absent from nature.
It is now, gradually we are getting familiar with the true potential of mushrooms.
They are not only the creator of life form; in fact, they are the protector and provider as well.
How? Read the article till the end and you will understand.
Certain species, including the oyster mushroom, produce enzymes that break down the tough, aromatic hydrocarbons found in petroleum and chemical. The mushrooms, commonly known as Mycorrhizal mushroom, form a mutually dependent, beneficial relationship with the roots of host plants, ranging from trees to grasses.

They are a kind of neural link between various plant species and living organisms deep inside the soil. Mycelium are threadlike tissue structures which is the building block or the body of the actual organism, and mushrooms as we know or see, they are the fruiting body of the mycelium, just like mangoes are the fruit of the mango tree. Actually, mushrooms are the reproductive part which produces millions of spores (Each spore is a single cell that is capable of sending out a hypha that will develop into a group and form its own mycelium. If the hypha of one spore meets up with the hypha of another, it begins the reproductive process of spore production through special spore-producing cells) which can further produce mycelium and mushrooms, in this way mushrooms continue their survival.
Not only plants, several microorganisms, termites, ants and wild organism which are critical for balance of ecosystem depends upon the mushrooms.
Humans are not far behind. Humanity’s use of mushrooms extends back to Palaeolithic times. Few people even anthropologists comprehend how influential mushrooms have been in affecting the course of human evolution,
They have played pivotal roles in ancient Greece, India and Mesoamerica. The oldest archaeological record of probable mushroom use is a Tassili image from a cave dating back 5000 years B.C.
In the fall of 1991, hikers in the Italian Alps came across the well-preserved remains of a man who died over 5300 years ago, approximately 1700 years later than the Tassili cave artist. Dubbed the “iceman” or “Oetzi” by the news media, he was well equipped with a knapsack, flint axe, a string of dried Birch Polypores ( Piptoporus betulinus), a tinder fungus (Fomes Fomentarius , and another as yet unidentified mushroom that may have had spiritual significance . Polypores can be used as spunk for starting fires and medicine for treating wounds. Further, a rich tea with immune enhancing and anti-bacterial properties can be prepared by boiling these mushrooms. Equipped for traversing the high alpine, this intrepid adventurer had discovered the value of the noble Polypores. Even today, this knowledge can be life saving for anyone astray in the wilderness.

The way mushrooms nourish and protects the climate, soil chemistry and microflora is phenomenal. In the very similar way, it nourishes and protects human health, it contains nutrients and medicinal properties which can benefit our body immensely. They are a great way to turn agricultural and forest by-products, like straw and
wastes, into nutritious and delicious edible protein.
Mushrooms are the ultimate health food! They contain antioxidants, immune boosting properties, low in calories, help in lowering blood pressure and healthy heart, and are proven to be beneficial for diabetes patients, bone strength development due to presence of vitamin D and B, mushroom are also beneficial for the nervous system due to presence of amino acids.

There is a plethora of medicinal mushrooms like Reishi, Enoki, Lion’s Mane, Chaga, Cordycep etc, which are proven to contain medicinal and healing properties and hence used as supplements and in pharma industry.
Mushrooms Role as Provider: Mushrooms also acts as a provider upon which thousands of farmers, traders, entrepreneurs depend upon throughout the world. Mushroom centric economic activity which I call mushroom economics is the hidden treasure and the ultimate untapped potential for true economic reform in modern world.
This world and the economics we have built in several centuries; the so-called development we have achieved, I sometimes doubt it and feel it’s all a myth and tragedy.
Just take a proper look, at what we have done to the earth, its habitats, the whole ecosystem is collapsing, the earth is dying every day. Each day we produce more and more toxic gas, drain toxic wastes into the ocean and rivers, several species of animal are on the brink of extinction, we kill trees in the name of development. Is it really development? Are we developing the world or destroying it?
Developing advanced technology so that we can colonize another planet , if one believe it can be habitable, once we finish destroying the earth. Is this development?
This COVID-19 situation should act as wakeup call for all the decision makers, power holders and common citizens.
I say let us embrace sustainable development. Any activity which hampers the environment and doesn’t contribute towards its restoration should be stopped. Money is just a representation of value for things, it’s just a piece of paper and all the money in the world can’t buy another earth. Our planet is precious and may be the only exception in the whole universe, which deserves our love and care. It’s time! Time to give back to our mother earth!
Each and every one of us should contribute towards this cause of sustainable development.
For my part, I have commenced towards this cause. I have embraced my initiative of mushroom economics because it contributes towards the cause of sustainable development, sustainable agriculture.
Mushrooms are natural recyclers. They grow on organic waste. Hence, they are cost effective. They will readily grow on cereal waste, corn cobs, coconut husk, cotton waste, coffee grounds, sugarcane bagasse, dried banana leaf, dead wood, saw dust, paper, every day organic wastes, etc.
The first thing we can do is to stop burning agricultural and organic waste and utilize it as a substrate for growing mushrooms. If you cannot, then at least donate it to a nearby mushroom grower.
Each and every mushroom cultivator must know this fact, that they are contributing towards the sustainable development of nature, they are among the people conducive to betterment of our planet and they deserve an applause.
In mushroom economics, each and every person, be it a spawn producer, substrate seller, mushroom trader, consumer, everyone is contributing to the cause.
The market size and the fan base of gourmet and medicinal mushrooms is growing each day. People are now more health conscious. There are several varieties of mushrooms to choose from and for all climate and weather, there is a specific mushroom that can be grown. You can start growing mushrooms right from your home. All you need is your coffee or tea waste or the paper in the dustbin.
The market price of mushrooms ranges from hundred to lacs of rupees per kilo gram.
Mushrooms are fast growing species; they do not occupy large space to grow because they can be grown in volumetric space using racks and ropes. Due to low input cost and high demand of this super food, profit margins are also great. Voila! Mushroom provides Health & Wealth both! Truly amazing they are.
